Who Supports the Educators? Understanding the Ecosystem of Higher Education

Universities around the world are navigating a period of unprecedented change.
Artificial intelligence is transforming how information is accessed and created. Student expectations are evolving. Workplaces are demanding new capabilities. Technology continues to reshape how we learn, communicate, and collaborate. At the same time, universities are responding to increasing complexity, accountability requirements, internationalisation, and shifting societal expectations.
Much of the conversation focuses on students. How should students use AI? What skills will graduates need in the future? How should assessment change?
These are important questions. Yet there is another question that receives far less attention: Who is supporting the educators expected to guide students through this change?

Educators at the Centre of Change
University educators occupy a unique position within higher education. They are expected to design meaningful learning experiences, facilitate critical thinking, support increasingly diverse student cohorts, integrate new technologies, adapt assessment practices, and prepare graduates for an uncertain future.
At the same time, many are balancing research responsibilities, publication demands, administrative requirements, institutional expectations, and rapidly changing educational landscapes.
The challenge is not simply learning how to use new technologies.
As I see it, the challenge is learning how to teach, learn, and adapt within a system that is continually evolving. And that raises an important question: How do we support the educators navigating this complexity?
Teaching Does Not Happen in Isolation
One of the assumptions that often appears in discussions about higher education is that teaching exists primarily within the classroom. In reality, teaching is shaped by a much broader ecosystem.
University educators work within environments influenced by:
institutional leadership
organisational culture
government policy
technological innovation
student expectations
workforce demands
social and generational change
disciplinary traditions
global developments
When any part of this ecosystem changes, educators are required to respond, and the introduction of AI provides a clear example.
While discussions often focus on the technology itself, the real challenge extends far beyond learning a new tool. Educators must consider how AI influences assessment, critical thinking, academic integrity, student engagement, graduate capabilities, and the broader purpose of higher education.
Technology may be the catalyst, but the challenge is fundamentally human. I know I keep returning to this idea throughout this article, but it sits at the heart of how I understand educational change.
The Human Side of Educational Change
As an Educational Psychologist, I have always been interested in how people learn, adapt, and develop capability. Learning is not simply the acquisition of information. It involves reflection, experimentation, feedback, confidence, relationships, identity, and growth.
The same is true for university educators. When institutions ask their educators to adapt, innovate, or respond to change, they are asking people to engage in a learning process themselves. This requires time. It requires support. And it requires opportunities for reflection and professional development.
Perhaps most importantly, it requires recognising that adaptation is not solely an individual responsibility. It is shaped by the broader ecosystem in which university educators work. I posted this one below in a previous blog:
Why Supporting Educators Matters
In conversations about the future of higher education, it can be tempting to focus on technology, systems, and innovation.
Yet meaningful and complex learning remains deeply human. Students continue to benefit from educators who can inspire curiosity, challenge assumptions, facilitate dialogue, create belonging, and support intellectual growth.
These capabilities cannot be automated. If anything, they are becoming more important.
As information becomes increasingly accessible, the role of the educator shifts from delivering content towards helping students make sense of complexity, develop judgement, and navigate uncertainty. This requires investment in educator development. Not because educators are lacking, but because the environment in which they teach is changing.
Looking Beyond the Individual
Supporting educators is not simply about offering professional development workshops or introducing new technologies.
It requires understanding the broader ecosystem in which teaching and learning take place. It means recognising the interconnected relationship between leadership, culture, policy, technology, student needs, and educator wellbeing.
When universities invest in educators, they are investing in the quality of learning itself. Why? Because while technologies, policies, and priorities may change, meaningful learning continues to depend on people.
Final Reflection
The future of higher education is often discussed in terms of technological advancement and innovation. Yet perhaps one of the most important questions is not what technologies universities adopt, but how they support the people expected to use them.
University educators do not teach in isolation. They teach within complex ecosystems shaped by relationships, institutions, cultures, technologies, and societies.
Understanding this ecosystem may be one of the most important steps we can take in supporting both educators and the students they serve. When educators are supported to learn, adapt, and thrive, the benefits extend far beyond the classroom.
